ZRC Swiss Made Watches
ZRC Geneva: 120 years
ZRC may not yet be a household name but it actually has a history that dates back to 1904, when it was founded by Edmond Zuccolo and Joseph Rochet. And you could even argue that ZRC ‘invented’ the modern wristwatch. In the early days, the firm specialised in making chains for pocket watches and it created the first ever ‘claw’ bracelets enabling these pocket watches to be worn on the wrist. This technological legacy of fresh thinking is still a hallmark of the company today.
Pushing the boundaries of technology
ZRC has always been known for engineering innovation, having won the highly-coveted Prix de l’Industrie Nouvelle de Geneve at the turn of the century, for having developed the first ever extendable metal bracelet – which went on to become a world leader.
As a turning machine specialist, ZRC’s customers would also commission the company to make waterproof cases for diving watches. In 1958, following a meeting with one of these customers, ZRC received an invitation to tender from the French Navy to supply entire diving watches – rather than just the case. And a legend was born.
George Brunet, the great grandson of Joseph Rochet, decided to study the re-issue of the classic Grands Fonds 300 dive watch 50 years after it was born and shortly after the ZRC GF300 was born with its distinctive crown at six o’clock.
The spirit of adventure and innovation
ZRC has always been associated with adventures and exploring. ZRC sponsored Alban Michon on his North Adventure expedition to the Arctic in 2018, wearing the GF300.
Pushing new boundaries, ZRC’s expertise in the deformation of metals also allowed it to manufacture waterproof watches to very great depths (over 5,000 metres) without the requirement of a helium release valve or the presence of gel in the case. Which in turn led to a reduced thickness in the case, making the watch more comfortable to wear.
ZRC in the UK
Veritime Ltd was appointed as the UK official and exclusive sales and distribution point for ZRC in September 2024, marking the first time that ZRC watches were available in the UK. ZRC watches can now be purchased on our website. However we will be looking to appoint a small number of official authorised dealers throughout the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland to carry the brand in some important cities and regions.
Neil Duckworth, the CEO of Veritime, tells us what makes ZRC stand out. “Just one look at the Grand Fonds answers that question: which other brand has the crown at six o’clock? But it is not in that position just for show. There’s a clever crown protection system that makes it impossible to place the watch in the water without screwing the crown down and so making the watch watertight. It’s also less obtrusive than having the crown on the side. The specifications of ZRC watches are exceptionally high. Not only because of the depth of water resistance, but also the enhanced calibre of Sellita movement with a higher power reserve. ZRC watches are highly distinctive and very special.”
